Big Conversation – Limehouse
Rushanara Ali, Member of Parliament for Bethnal Green and Bow
Roz Kaveney, trans advocate, poet and diversity guru
Rainbow Hamlets are hosting two Big Conversation events in coming weeks to enable as many people as possible to get involved. It is almost 18 months since we transformed ourselves into a professional agency. Come along to hear us report back and have your say in our future direction.
The events are supported by the Clinical Commissioning Group (the group representing all the GPs in Tower Hamlets). They have asked us to find our what LGBT people think about how well you are involved in making decisions about services, and what they could do better, so they can refresh the way they involve people.
Both events feature a guest speaker who will touch on issues at the heart of local LGBT concerns.
All are welcome. Enjoy refreshments and a convivial, stimulating atmosphere! It would really help with our numbers if you could let us know if you thinking of coming.
THE PAST – AND THE FUTURE
The LGBT History Season in 2014 extended from the only LGBT Holocaust Memorial Day event in January to a concert (Seasons of Love and Music) in March with 80+ member of the London Gay Men’s Chorus in a grade 1 listed church with staging provided by a local mosque. In between there were interviews with Dave Lynn, a much loved drag performer, live music from Ted Walker Brown, a Gay Liberation Front veteran, with gay-influenced blues and rock numbers, and an award winning run of Trouser-Legged Characters a one woman show by Rose Collis, historian, exploring masculine women and feminine men with no more than her wit and a banjalolee.
In February 2015 we collaborated with Positive East and Mind (Tower Hamlets and nationally) to put together an LGBT History Month ‘Village Fayre’.
Rainbow Hamlets has developed a close relationship with Imaan the LGBT Muslim group. This has included hosting events such as LGBT Iftar, and exploring threats to Muslim LGBT people. We are planning to host several LGBT Iftars during Ramadan in 2015 and are exploring other facilities we can offer. In particular we are expecting to provide space for LGBT-friendly monthly Friday prayers.
We have also been building an interest in sports and active hobbies. We are sponsoring East End Phoenix, an LGBT football club, and intend to launch supporter’s club activities with them.
These activities promote cohesion amongst LGBT people, reducing loneliness, and build understanding in the wider community.
